Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandma and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on words as a young child. Ford was first interested in acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
